~Discover Coron, Palawan~

Coron is part of the Calamian group of islands in Northern Palawan. If you are looking for a truly unique vacation where you get to commune with nature, Coron is the best place to visit. 

It's a haven for divers all over the world with its famous World War II underwater shipwrecks surrounded with magnificent coral reefs making it as one of the best dive spots in the world. A Must-See

There are many attractions you can discover in Coron Island alone. It is a black limestone island with exhilarating cliffs cascading down to thirteen grandiose lakes (only two open to public), sugary white sand coral beaches and is home to an indigenous tribe. It is known for Kayangan Lake, Barracuda Lake, Twin Lagoon, Banol Beach, and numerous snorkeling areas where you can see underwater rock formations.

Barracuda Lake has amazing underwater rock formations. Kayangan lake has the most photographed view in Palawan and considered as the cleanest lake in the country. Both places are stunning and good for snorkeling. A cross on Mt.Tapyas above the town is worth a climb up to see the majestic view of the small islands below. Noticeable from the water is a CORON sign on a hill overlooking the town mimicking the well-known Hollywood sign. The Kingfisher Park offers kayaking tours into the abundant natural mangroves.

Note: Another 35-minute trip by land will take you to the Coron municipality proper. The land trip itself is a treat with views of verdant countryside and cows lazing along the road at Yulo King Ranch.

WHEN TO GO

The weather in Coron is characterized as sunny, dry and hot. The exceptions are the months of July and August, where you can expect rainfall to be at its heaviest because of the habagat (southwest monsoon). December, January and February are the coolest months due to the amihan (northeast monsoon). Generally, the weather is excellent the whole year through, except for the rare times where there is a tropical storm or depression. Temperatures fall between 24 to 33 degrees Celsius.

GETTING AROUND

The tricycle is the main mode of transport in Coron. The friendly tricycle drivers will happily take you to the major sights inside the municipality. If you want to do-it-yourself tour of the countryside, you can also opt to rent a motorcycle. As for travel to other municipalities, public utility vehicles (jeepneys) and buses provide regular trips to these routes.

What’s more, Coron town serves as an excellent jump off point to other islands in the area, such as Calauit Wildlife Sanctuary, Black Island and many others. TRAVEL TIPS

Here are some things to remember to make your trip :

• Clothing: Light, loose and comfortable clothing is recommended as Coron has a tropical climate.

• Money: Be sure to bring enough Philippine Pesos for your entire stay. Some hotels and establishments have money changing services and also accept major credit cards. Hotels may also accommodate guests' requests for a cash advance against a credit card. Travelers' checks are usually not accepted. A single ATM machine is available (Landbank) but only caters to banks accredited under ExpressNet.

• Conservation Fees: There are conservation Fees imposed by Marine Park Managements, Tagbanua Tribes of Coron Island and other tourists attractions for its protection and management.

• Environment: Practice ecological responsibility. Please do not litter or collect plants and animals.

• Health: Remember to bring insect repellant and an adequate supply of your personal prescription medications. A district hospital and several pharmacies are available to serve your health needs.

• Communications: Cellular phone service is available. You can also find internet service in some hotels and internet cafes. Resorts may also have a satellite phone connection.

• Electricity: The electrical system in Coron runs at 220 volts. Most outlets use flat parallel flat blades, so you may have to bring an adapter.

WHAT TO DO

Diving and snorkeling. Coron is famous for the World War II wrecks that are to be found in its waters. These 12 sunken Japanese warships make up what is considered as one of the best dive sites in the world. Now, if it is nature you'd like to see, you can go snorkeling at Siete Pecados, boasts of a thriving marine population and stunning coral reefs. Explore the Town Get to know the town center and its warm and friendly people. Activities you can indulge visiting a cashew processing factory, observing the operation of a live fish exporting factory, drop by the wet market, do some souvenir shopping or just simply sit at the plaza and go people watching.

Trekking Climb the 700 or so steps up to Mount Tapyas and be rewarded with the sight of Coron town and the surrounding islands. Yes, the climb is well worth it! Also, for avid mountain climbers, there is Mt. Darala, which is the highest point in the Calamianes Islands.

Island Hopping There are so many islands and islets to explore! Go on a motorized boat trip and stop by and swim, kayak, fish or snorkel to your heart's content.
